PROMISE Technology

Delivering the best density, reliability and TCO, HGST Ultrastar He8 hard disk drives enable PROMISE VSky H3970 users to store, secure and harness the power of data

HSINCHU, Taiwan and MILPITAS, Calif., April 7, 2015 - PROMISE Technology Inc., a recognized global leader in the storage industry, today announced that it has qualified the 8TB HGST Ultrastar He8 helium-filled hard disk drive (HDD) in its VSky H3970 Series of 4U 70 bay storage servers to address the growing demand for ultra-dense, high-capacity solutions at lower costs. By incorporating HGST's HelioSeal platform technology, PROMISE users benefit from enhanced performance, unsurpassed reliability, maximized storage density, and optimum energy efficiency for reduced total cost of ownership (TCO).

Leveraging the inherent benefits of helium, which is one-seventh the density of air, PROMISE has qualified the Ultrastar He8 HDD to advance the TCO value proposition for hyperscale cloud data centers, enterprises, and system integrators. HGST HelioSeal drives also feature an unprecedented reliability rating of 2.5M hours MTBF. With VSky H3970 and Ultrastar He8 HDDs, users are provided with 560TB of raw capacity in a single cost-effective 4U unit, making it an ideal solution for PROMISE customers in the rich media, video surveillance, and cloud/IT markets requiring petabyte scale storage on a budget.

"PROMISE is excited to have qualified HGST Ultrastar He8 hard drives in the VSky H3970 which provides users with a reliable, ultra-dense solution designed to fit within their crowded data center," said James Lee, CEO, PROMISE Technology. "VSky H3970 delivers over ½ a petabyte of storage in a single, highly-efficient system which helps customers cut capital expenses and operating expenses and enables them to manage, store and protect massive amounts of data."

"The storage required to keep up with exponential data growth is not only going to necessitate ever increasing capacities, but also dramatic efficiencies in power, cooling and floor space," said Brendan Collins, vice president of product marketing, HGST. "Improving TCO on virtually every level-from storage density, lower power, to reliability, capacity and more, the HGST Ultrastar He8 hard drive together with VSky H3970, allows PROMISE Technology to offer their customers a scalable solution that can address the challenges of today's demanding data center environments."

VSky H3970 is a hyperscale computing 4U 70 bay platform which provides high-availability, high storage capacity and high networking throughput to help enterprises address the avalanche of data that is rapidly filling their file servers. VSky H3970 features two independent server nodes in one enclosure with a 70 disk pool and provides flexible configuration modes to meet the needs of different deployment scenarios. VSky H3970 is a cost effective, green storage solution that lowers cost per terabyte, requires less rack space and reduces electricity costs. With VSky H3970, customers can experience a faster time to market since there is less cabling required, making the installation much simpler. Advancing the TCO value propositions for data centers

HGST's 8TB Ultrastar He8 is the company's second-generation helium-filled HDD. The 8TB Ultrastar He8 extends HGST's leadership in delivering technology and innovation that advances the TCO value proposition for cloud data centers, enterprises, OEMs and system integrators. Outstripping what any HDD vendor can do using air, the Ultrastar He8 enables more efficient data center designs and operations by reducing the physical and carbon footprint of the overall storage systems. Addressing the largest data center challenges, the sealed, helium-filled hard drives enable lower power consumption and higher density storage systems, requiring less rack space. Additionally, the helium-sealed hard drives require less cooling and can be used more reliably in wider operating environments such as ambient data centers. Based on mainstream perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology, the Ultrastar He8 can be deployed into a multitude of applications and environments without tradeoffs in performance or device compatibility.
